I
have
had the unique opportunity to work with literally thousands
of lawyers from all different kinds of practice areas and in
all different kinds of markets. But it wasnt until I discovered
a fantastic book by Cynthia Kersey called Unstoppable
that I began to be able to predict with any degree of accuracy
how successful a lawyer would be in his or her career.
Once I absorbed
those lessons, I went back through my files and notes from the
thousands of lawyers who had come to me for help with opening,
marketing, managing, growing and some of them even selling their
law firms for a handsome profit. And I tested the theory that
in order for him or her to be successful a lawyers goals
had to be multi-dimensional.
And you
know what? The theory held water!
I
finally had an analytic framework for understanding
exactly why some lawyers are only moderately successful while
others with no greater talent or skill enjoy extra-ordinary
success in their professional and personal lives.
Best
Predictor Of Success
Ive
seen lawyers make a success of themselves in almost every practice
area imaginable, and Ive seen plenty who have failed at
those same practice areas. But what Ive never been able
to do is predict success or failure based on age, race, personality,
or even what law school someone graduated from, their grades,
or even, or even how many hours they spent in the barn, I mean
office my Coaching Clients know what I mean - Instead,
the best, in fact the only reliable predictor Ive found
for predicting whether and how successful a lawyer is going
to be in the long-run with his or her business, is the degree
to which their career and their firm supports all three of the
lawyers needs: Financial, Personal and Professional.
Have you
ever stopped to ask yourself exactly why
you want your law firm business to succeed? I know it sounds
like a simple question, but if its so simple, try saying
it out loud right now. Try writing it down. Close your
door and be honest with yourself, even if your motivations are
not politically correct or especially benevolent.
Are You
Living On Purpose?
One of my
favorite quotes from Kerseys Unstoppable is when she explains
that By living on purpose and pursuing dreams and goals
that are consistent with your natural strengths and desires,
you can create unstoppable passion almost effortlessly. And
when that happens, nothing can stop you!
So lets
align your true motivations with your business plan. Lets
give you almost effortless energy. Lets make your success
unstoppable by making sure that you know why you want to be
successful and what success means to you in real terms of dollars;
time for family, friends & yourself; and the kind of work
youll be doing every day.
Why do
you want to have a successful law firm business?
To
live up to my fathers expectations. So I never
have to worry again about being taken advantage of by my partners.
To show-up my law school classmates who got jobs with
big firms. So that I can pursue my other passion
which is bicycle racing. To have the money to support
my wife & kids at a level I can be proud of when the rest
of the family comes to visit.
These are
all actual reasons lawyers have shared with me over the years
for what really drives them to have a successful law firm of
their own. Not particularly charitable, are they? Some are even
contemptible. But they are all very real answers to that simple
question I posed to you above. By the way, do you have an answer
